# BISG joins the EPUB 3 endorsement bandwagon

Ebooks have really taken off in the last couple of years and with the release of the EPUB 3 standard for ebook last fall, publishers have been moving to adopt it. EPUB 3 is particularly appealing to people in the technical community and to educators because it *requires* the use of MathML for the equations. By using MathML, the math can match the font and size of the surrounding text, is searchable, can be evaluated, and is accessible to everyone -- that's a big improvement over using images for math, which most of the older standards still use.

Last week, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) endorsed EPUB as the preferred format for eBook. BISG is one of the publishing industry's largest study groups. They promote book industry standards "to conduct business more efficiently and cost-effectively." Their endorsement, after studying the options, makes it even clearer that EPUB 3 is the ebook standard to use.

We are proud to have been a part of the standards committee that developed EPUB 3. Our MathFlow products, which are used by most of the major publishers for math, gave the committee confidence that adding MathML to EPUB documents is technically feasible; MathPlayer, which is by far the most widely used math accessibility tool, also gave them confidence that the math in an EPUB eBook would be universally accessible.
