EASI Webinar: Using accessible mathematics eText in the classroom -- June 17, 2014

Next week I'll be presenting a webinar hosted by EASI (Equal Access to Software and Information). I'll be discussing the results of two research studies where middle-school students with learning disabilities used eText containing MathML with assistive technology. Using MathML, students were able to use the same assistive technology in math class as they did for all their other subjects. Furthermore, these studies indicated improved academic performance in mathematics for students using digital instructional materials created with MathML.

Design Science donates to the "Mathematics in ebooks" project

Frederic Wang is an independent developer who works on open source efforts such as Mozilla's MathML support and MathJax. Recently, he launched a Mathematics in ebooks crowdfunded project. The stated goal of this project is "improving rendering quality in WebKit and Gecko so that EPUB publishers can rely on it." WebKit is the HTML engine used internally in many ebook readers, including Readium, the EPUB ebook reader produced under the aegis of IDPF.

Design Science Needs Good People!

Design Science has been involved in mathematical notation technology for 25 years now! During that time computers have gotten much, much more powerful and the internet has changed our lives enormously. Still, math notation has not changed at all during that time and editing it on a computer remains pretty much the same task. But things are about to change! The rise of mobile and tablet devices, web-based applications living in "the cloud", social media, semantic processing, and other technologies presents a ground-changing opportunity for our company.
